You may be wondering what alt.news 26:46 has been up to this month thus far, and even if you haven’t, we’re going to give you a blog post about it anyway! Hooray! First, alt.news made the trip from Carbondale, Illinois, to Texas on October 6th through the 9th. While there, four alt.newsers (Cara Gordon, Michael Berman, Marcus Odom, and Haley Conner) each produced a segment in various parts of the state.
First, in San Antonio, Texas, alt.news shot a segment about Morgan’s Wonderland, a unique family-oriented 25-acre park that is designed to be accessible to and enjoyed by those with special needs. We also visited Vince Hannemann, otherwise known as the Junk King, who has built an entire cathedral out of intricately placed “junk” in Austin, Texas. The village of Mueller in Austin, Texas, is also reusing discarded articles in unique ways in their efforts to maintain an extremely sustainable community, complete with streets made of former runway materials, and playground equipment made with reused building materials. Just outside of Fort Worth, Texas, is the Fossil Rim Wilde Preserve, which is a non-profit organization that houses and breeds numerous endangered species. We took a guided tour of the preserve, and even were able to ride a few ostriches. Okay, maybe not, but we did get to see some ostriches and other exotic animals, like emus, giraffes, and rhinos.
In addition to the fantastic segments produced in Texas, two more segments were shot this month. We visited Poplar Bluff, Missouri, on October 14th to shoot Tough Mudder which purports to (probably) be the “toughest event on the planet.” If you do not believe that, just ask the segment’s host, David Goold, who participated in the intense 10 to 12 mile obstacle course, which involved electric challenges, army crawling, and diving into mud. The challenge not only encourages teamwork and camaraderie within participants, but also raises money for the Wounded Warrior Project. In St. Louis, Missouri, Sarah Wingate produced a segment on the St. Louis Fire Technicians with the help of three other crew members on October 19th. The crew attended a zombie-themed fire-spinning show at the Third Degree Glass Factory in celebration of their 10th anniversary.
Currently, we are extremely busy finishing up all production on episode #14.02, which will be our music-themed Distortion episode. On Monday, October 29th, we filmed the open for the episode. We have a feeling that you will enjoy watching it just as much as we enjoyed making it, as if Colin Hay, AWOLNATION, Imagine Dragons, and Mac Miller were not enough to convince you to watch. Did I mention that we’re going to Nashville on the 31st? Never mind, you will just have to wait until the next episode to find out what we are shooting there. If you cannot wait for another sneak peek, check back here for a photo-filled blog post about our Distortion open!
